Outdoor art to push design difference

27 May 2010

Melbourne company Entanglements plans to target the outdoor design and architectural sector at the upcoming Decoration + Design trade fair, with an elaborate landscaped display centred around one of its signature pergolas.

Entanglements' Helen Neyland said the high design content of the company's products had led it to expand its market.

"We sell our product across Australia, New Zealand and Japan. We used to sell primarily garden centres and galleries, but now we're finding that landscape gardeners and architects are more closely aligned to our client focus. This is how we want to pitch the company going forward, so we'll be showcasing our product in an elaborate display to target landscape gardeners and architects."

Founded by former visual merchandisers Helen and Ian Neyland, Entanglements specialises in metal, laser cut outdoor artworks and has become well known for popularising the deliberately ‘rusty' finish of its pieces, all of which are treated with rust control finish to ensure they do not over-oxidise.

The Entanglements range includes a wide array of panels and sculptures as well as plant frames, pot holders, weather vanes and water features. Purchasers can choose from the company's existing lines or have pieces custom made to their requirements.

Currently, the company's strongest growth area was its light box range, which had been designed with court yard gardens and pool walls in mind, Neyland said.

"Our signature light features are cut from steel with a sealed rusted finish. This range is designed by us in Melbourne and can be back lit to create a stunning night effect. Perfect for outdoor dining areas or a pool wall, these pieces are equally impressive by day."

Fire pits were also extremely strong sellers, she said.

"They're a wonderful new way of using outdoor spaces. There's something quite primal about them; everyone enjoys sitting around them, winter or summer, and they sort of ‘go into the zone'. They're real conversation pieces, and very Australian; they're also big showy pieces with a lot of attitude."
