Some of the lampshades are made to order. Most are for Bloomingdales' own lamps. And all are expertly handmade from either parchment or a wide range of textiles that include pure silks.
"We have eight craftspeople at our lampshade workshop and the custom-made service is very popular. Clients can bring in their own fabrics and trims if they prefer," says Bloom Rheuben, co-founder of the Sydney lighting and decorator accessories company.
Fourteen years have passed since the interior designer and her business partner, John de Largie D'alton, launched Bloomingdales. "It started in a little backyard garage and now we have showrooms across Australia as well as in New Zealand," says Bloom.
Classical, deco, contemporary - Bloom dips into past and present to create sharply individual designs for lighting that ranges from chandeliers to floor lamps, and for occasional furniture such as coffee and bedside tables, tallboys, chests of drawers and desks.
Bloomingdales' versatility has not been overlooked by the corporate world. Project work includes large and boutique hotels, display homes and serviced apartments.
